BetterHelp vs Talkspace vs Calmerry: live video, messaging, and cancellation
Facts checked October 15, 2026. Operated by Alpha Origin LLC. Not medical advice.
Three different products under one weekly price
BetterHelp publishes one cash range, about $70–$100 per week, that typically includes one live session a week (about 30–45 minutes) plus messaging, and an in-network insurance path. Talkspace publishes three cash tiers — $69, $99, and $109 per week — and leads its pricing page with insurance. Calmerry publishes promotional weekly packages, billed monthly, and states it does not bill insurers. Prices were read from those public pages on October 15, 2026.
The two-company notes on live video versus messaging-only sit on the Talkspace vs BetterHelp page. This page adds Calmerry’s package counts and the cancellation language each company actually prints.
Live video: length and how many you get
Do not treat “has video” as the same allotment.
- BetterHelp (cash description): typically one live session per week, about 30–45 minutes, by video, phone, or live chat. Extra sessions may cost more.
- Talkspace: the $69 tier is messaging. The $99 and $109 tiers describe up to four 30-minute videos per month, not a 45-minute hour every week. Four 30-minute sessions are two hours of live time a month.
- Calmerry: live videos are listed as 30 minutes. Package counts on the pricing page run from messaging-only up to four live videos a month. A messaging-only Calmerry plan is not a live-therapy subscription.
Messaging is not a crisis line
All three describe messaging as something the therapist answers when they are working, not as instant chat. Talkspace’s messaging-only plan notes responses five days a week. Calmerry describes counselor replies on working days. BetterHelp says you can message anytime and the therapist responds when available.
If you need same-day crisis care in the United States, call or text 988. A subscription inbox is not that service.
Insurance changes which of the three are even comparable
If the point of the subscription is that the platform bills your plan, Calmerry is out. It says it does not work with insurers directly; you can request a receipt. BetterHelp and Talkspace both publish in-network pathways. Member cost can be a low copay or $0 when benefits apply, and it can be the full cash rate when they do not. Feature limits can also change on an insurance plan, including some messaging tools — read that note in each signup flow.
Cancellation rules that are actually printed
“Cancel anytime” still leaves you with the current billing period and, on some plans, a short refund window. These are the statements on the pages reviewed October 15, 2026, not a contract review.
- BetterHelp: pause or cancel anytime in account settings. The pricing page reviewed did not state a cancellation fee.
- Talkspace: pause or cancel anytime, per the pricing page. Cash plans can be monthly, quarterly, or biannual — a longer prepay is a longer commitment even if the button says cancel.
- Calmerry: cancel anytime. If therapy has started, the company FAQ says unused sessions may be refundable within the first 7 days, reviewed case by case. That window is not the same as a standing refund of a monthly charge.
A straight choice, not a ranking
Choose Talkspace or BetterHelp when an insurer has to be billed. Choose BetterHelp’s flat week when you want one live session each week and you do not want to pick a video-count package. Choose Talkspace’s $69 tier or Calmerry’s messaging promo only if messaging is actually the product you want. Choose Calmerry’s four-video package if 30-minute sessions and cash pay are acceptable and you have confirmed the renewal price behind the promotional weekly figure.
